Essays in this Issue

Essays in the September 2018 issue of Wordgathering have a decidedly Irish flavor. Des Kenny and John Lee Clark each look back at the legacy of an Irish writer with disabilities. In Kenny's case, the writer is Christy Brown, widely known through the portrayal of his life in the movie My Left Foot; in Clark's it is the the Deafblind poet Charles Joseph Kickham. Adding a slightly broader brush to these essays Sarah Fitzgerald's "The Need for a Collective" describes the importance of the Independent Living Movement in Ireland.

The three remaining pieces in this section include Saloua Ali Ben Zahra’s translation of poetry by Tunisian poet Moncef Ghachem into English, Jessica Penner’s account of living with Ollier's disease and Dorothy Ellen Palmer defense of the suburbs as welcome living spaces for disabled people.

Wordgathering invites the submissions of literary essays that contribute to the field of disability literature. Check the submission guidelines for specifics. Queries can be addressed to comments@wordgathering.com.
